United Public Workers, Local 646 Endorses Makana Paris for OHA At-Large
HONOLULU — United Public Workers, AFSCME, Local 646, AFL-CIO officially endorses Makana Paris for OHA Trustee At-Large.
UPW represents over 13,000 public and private workers across the state. Starting as a collection of plantation workers fighting oppressive per diem conditions in 1944, UPW now provides fiscal and membership benefits, legal services, and political representation to its members on all four islands. They have been instrumental in coordinating cross-union responses to significant restrictions on workers rights over the last few decades.
“UPW’s historic and ongoing contributions on behalf of Hawai‘i’s workers are the reason for the standard of living that so many in Hawai‘i enjoy, and UPW’s watchfulness continues to protect our public and private workers in this time of economic change in Hawai‘i,” said Makana Paris. “I am honored by their endorsement of me to serve the best interests of Native Hawaiians as a fiduciary and Trustee at OHA.”
